About Us:
The
reactivated Company G, 142d Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, is a family
oriented IRS registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering the
history of the American Civil War era. We perform living history
demonstrations, Civil War battle reenactments, military drills, parades,
memorials, ceremonies and other related public portrayals of
historically accurate Civil War era military and civilian lifestyles and
activities.
Location
of Organization:
We are located in the
Stroudsburg, PA area but our membership also comes from various other places
such as the Lehigh Valley and NE New Jersey.
Typical Schedule:
Our annual reenacting schedule
generally consists of approximately 20 events a year, and our reenacting season
runs from March's St. Patrick's Day Parade through Remembrance Day in
Gettysburg in November. Our activities range from major reenactments such
as Gettysburg, Cedar Creek, and Antietam to small local living histories such as
the Quiet Valley events held in July and October.

Meetings:
We do not have any formal
minimum attendance requirements; we recognize that folks have other commitments,
too. We have five or six high school and college students among our
membership and we recognize that school takes priority.
Officers:
We have two sets of officers,
Corporate and Military. The corporate officers are the president, vice
president, treasurer, secretary, and civilian coordinator. The military
officers consist of a lieutenant, a sergeant, and a corporal. Both sets of
officers are elected annually for a one year term.
Dues:
Annual 142d dues are ten
dollars per year per household, so that $10 will cover an entire family who
reenacts. Civilian reenactors have the option of full membership or
associate membership. The only difference between the two categories is
that associate members pay five dollars per year per household, so that $5 will
cover an entire family who wishes to maintain Associate Member status. They do not, however, have
the right to vote.
Who can join our
organization:
Our membership is quite
diverse. We come from all walks of life, and our membership ranges in age from
junior high school students to retirees. The 142d itself does not have age
limits, but common reenacting protocol states that 13-year-olds can take the
field as functional musicians (not just uniformed children carrying a
drum); the minimum age to carry a rifle into battle is 16.
Within the 142d we welcome both military and civilian reenactors. The
military, of course, consists of all the soldiers. The civilians are
primarily wives, children, girlfriends and so forth who dress in period costume and
reenact with us.
How and where to obtain
gear:
Uniforms, equipments, tents
and so forth are available from any of a large number of sutlers (the equivalent
of the modern day PX). A good number of sutlers show up at all of the
major reenactments. Many of them also have their own web sites, and most
have mail-order catalogues as well. We suggest that before you go and
purchase gear, you speak with one of our members. There are many sutlers
that sell unauthentic and poorly made goods. The best way to put together
an authentic, high quality kit is to shop around and converse with other
reenactors. Most of us have been cheated by sutlers before and will gladly
offer advice so that others can avoid wasting their money and time on bad gear.
Within this website you can view a list of recommended sutlers and link directly
to their site by going to the Reenacting Links
page.
Gear Pricing:
All
new members are expected to purchase their own gear.
However, recognizing that the cost of a kit can be expensive,
142d members have created a loaner pool of uniforms and equipage
for new members. We would like to see everyone on the
field as soon as possible so we are more than happy to loan out
extra gear until such time as new equipment can be purchased.
When new members are ready to purchase their gear, we advise
that they consult with a veteran member beforehand on which
sutlers to purchase from. We have all had the experience
of buying poor quality, non-authentic gear only to have to
repurchase gear soon after and would like to assist our new
members with avoiding those pitfalls.
To assist with your decision on the
type, quality, and authenticity of the gear you will need to
purchase, we have provided two tables listing all of the gear
and prices. The first table is for a higher quality, more
authentic kit and the second is for a typical "sutler row"
kit.
It's perfectly okay to mix different types of gear. For
example, you may wish to purchase a more authentic, higher
quality sack coat and trousers, since these items are highly
visible, and buy a lesser authentic set of leathers, shirt,
brogans, and socks. The decision is completely up to you!
We do NOT require that you purchase the more expensive,
authentic gear.
The prices listed next to each
item are for High Quality, Highly Authentic gear:

REMEMBER: It's
perfectly okay to mix different types of gear! You can
also buy sutler row quality gear and "fix it up." For
example, many of our members buy the sutler row canteen then
recover it with jean cloth and replace the jack chain with hemp
string. For a few bucks, you can fix up most items as long
as they are close to authentic to begin with. This is why
we ask that all members shop for their kit with a veteran member
who can show them some money saving tips and tricks.
